On metaphors in thinking about preparing mathematics for teaching

Abstract This paper explores how different schools of thought in mathematics education think and speak about preparing for teaching by introducing proposing certain metaphors. Among the metaphors under consideration here are unpacking metaphor, which finds its origin Anglo-American school pedagogical reduction mathematics; elementarization has German didactic reconstruction recontextualization originates French transposition. The metaphorical language used these is based on theoretical positions, orientations, images teaching. Although powerful allow ways thinking speaking teaching, they suggest that largely a one-sided process sense an adaptation knowledge question. To promote more holistic understanding, alternative metaphor offered: as ecological engineering. By using engineering preparation presented two-sided involves both modification environment.
